There's something about summer that I love - I'm not sure if it's being in the great outdoors, the sun beating down on my wintered complexion, the fresh smell of the bush or just lazing around the pool as the sun sets. One thing I am certain of and that is that each and every Classic Safari Camp has something special to offer, something that is certain to stay with you long after you return home...

To kick off this quarter, we've re-designed our website and nudged our camps to throw in some awesome specials that will ensure you keep coming back to us...

We are very proud to announce that Governors' Camp has been rated best Hotel in Kenya by Travel and Leisure Magazine's Best Hotels in the World 2010.

Greystoke Mahale
Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania
What's going on with the wildlife in western Tanzania!! There are chimps with major, did I say major, attitude at Greystoke Mahale. Pimu, the current Alpha Male entertained (and somewhat alarmed it must be said) us all last week with wild 'Jimi Hendrix' air guitar displays as he rampaged through the kitchen and staff area screaming at the top of his lungs as 'lesser' chimps scattered whilst branches rained down on all.

Mowani Mountain Camp
Damaraland, Namibia
One of the activities offered by Mowani Mountain Camp is a drive along the dry Aba Huab Riverbed in search of the Desert Elephant.

These animals are grey in colour, slightly smaller than the African Elephant and inhabit the ephemeral riverbeds found in north-west Namibia. These seasonal rivers depend on local rain before flowing above ground. The Desert Elephant are very well adapted to living under these desert conditions. They walk great distances (approximately 70km) between feeding grounds and the scattered waterholes where they drink during the dry season.
Loldia House
Lake Naivasha, Kenya
Bottoms Up.

Lake Naivasha - one of the Rift Valley's fresh water lakes had been severely affected by a prolonged drought and the lake levels were lower than in living memory. Heavy continuous rains in the Aberdare Mountains thankfully have pushed the lake levels back up to normal. Guests have loved seeing huge flocks of White Pelicans and the myriad of other water birds. There have been an unusual number of Leopards seen on the Ranch - most guests see at least one but on an occasion this month five different leopards were seen in a day, with one strolling through the Loldia Lawns! This dwarfed the excitement of watching the nightly forages of the Aardvark.
Joy's Camp

Shaba National Reserve, Kenya

Coming into Joy's camp feels like home. There is a warm vibe and calm ambiance that surrounds the camp. The lions too have felt this serene comfort, and have found their way to the back of camp as if to say they belong here. The mornings are great - waking up wondering what has been out there and seeing what fresh footprints are on the paths. Even great big elephants love strolling past the Joy's Camp driveway!
Wolwedans Dune Camp

Namib Rand Nature Reserve, Namibia

We are delighted to announce that the 6 new tents at Wolwedans Dune Camp are now completed. The camp still accommodates up to 12 guests and is still small and intimate. The accommodation, however, is in much larger, spacious and more open tents, each has its own private bathroom as well as a bigger deck area on the outside. The Dune Camp is ideal for the individual traveller or even a group of people travelling together. There is a minimum stay of 2 nights at the Wolwedans Dune Camp.

How's That!

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge Kaokoland, Namibia

Pieter De Wet (Okahirongo Elephant Lodge) joined Dr Flip Stander (Desert Rhino Project) recently when they spent 48 hours monitoring the movements of the desert lions. These animals became a threat to the local community at Puros when they started wondering around the village and the community's huts. The team tried everything in order to scare these lions away including making fires, shooting fire crackers and playing loud music (ACDC!) but the lions were persistent in staying. The desert lions were eventually darted and relocated down river from Puros. What an amazing 48 hours!

Classic Recipe

Jaci's Chilli and Garlic Puddle

Jaci's Safari Lodge (Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa)

They say repetition is boring, but not when it comes to our chilli & garlic concoction WHICH IS GENERALLY SERVED before meal times here at Jaci's. Whether it be a dip for OUR WELL KNOWN phaphathas (traditional doughy bread rolls cooked on an open fire before dinner), or our homemade bread at lunch setting; or EVEN added as a source to liven up a soup, WHICH is a must.

There are no quantities for this recipe but go ahead, be creative and do just as you please.

We take equal AMOUNTS of garlic as well as green or red chillies, AND chop them up finely. Cut lemon into wedges.
Arrange mixed chilli and garlic on a side plate or mortar and pestle for decorative purposes. Squeeze the lemon into the mix.
Pour some olive oil in, so that the bottom of the plate is covered; add a bit of balsamic vinegar (if you wish)
Salt and pepper to taste

Serve with A BITE SIZE of fresh homemade bread or rolls.

HINT: We've been told that back in the big smoke, a French loaf has guaranteed results with this mix.

Enjoy!
