Mowani Mountain Camp |
|
Damaraland – North West Namibia |
“The worth of water is greatly valued when the well is
dry” – Benjamin Franklin.
Very applicable to Namibia! Mowani receives an annual
rainfall of 50-70mm. This rainy season we received a
rainfall of ± 198mm! The area transformed from barren
desert to picturesque green within two months. With the
rains came the problem of traveling to and from the
area, as rivers flooded and were a challenge to pass
through. The Mowani staff was on standby to assist and
retrieve vehicles from the Aba-Huab river at both
crossings, and together with the locals performed tasks
ranging mechanics to recovery!
The contrasts are everlasting, so, when a tourist asks
“When is the best time to travel to “Namibia?” the
answer given by Mowani staff is “Always – dry or wet”. |

Loisaba Wilderness |
|
Laikapia – Kenya |
Luckily wildlife ignores politics….much to the enjoyment
of the guests we have had since Christmas! As witnessed
by our lucky balloonists one morning in February - first
they watched a pack of wild dogs hunt and scrag an
impala while hanging in the crystal morning air at 200
feet! A short drift on and they saw 2 leopards hunt and
kill a dik dik! Aerial Carnivore Action! All this before
enjoying a champagne breakfast in the company of
elephants! |

Madikwe – South Africa |
James (14), from UK, suffers from the rare genetic condition EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa).
He has never walked, yet abandoned his wheelchair for a Land cruiser with Neil (guide) for 4
days of excellent sightings including lions, elephants and leopard.
James joined Madikwe’s field ecologist, Declan Hofmeyer, on an operation to identify wounds on
wild dogs. Declan anaesthetised the dogs using a dart gun. With the dogs immobilised James got
the opportunity of a lifetime to get close and personal with this endangered predator.
The dog’s condition was Bont-Legged tick bite, which heals of its own accord.
The African wilderness was James’s life dream and for us it was most rewarding to be part of this.
