Just 10 kilometres north of the equator, on the top of Mughwango Hill, is Elsa’s Kopje – a luxury lodge with wide vistas and such imaginative architecture that it captures your heart immediately.
Elsa’s Kopje, named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s biographical book and film “Born Free”, is an incredible achievement considering the landscape and the nature of the lodge. It is almost invisible to the eye as it blends into the rocky crags of the “kopje” (small hill), built above the site of George Adamson’s original campsite.
Each of its 8 cottages is the ultimate ‘room-with-a-view’, uniquely designed and crafted from natural materials incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside, so that the rocks and trees have become part of the furniture. Each cottage has spacious double or twin beds with ensuite, elegantly appointed bathrooms. There is an open bar, lounge and dining room with an exceptionally inviting infinity pool overlooking the Meru plains. Another feature is a 15-metre-wide suspension bridge that leads guests over a gorge to two of the rooms.
Elsa’s Kopje is the only fully operating lodge within Meru National Park, meaning that our guests have the entire park to themselves. Meru National Park is known for its diversity of habitats and species. It is possible to pass from savannah, through woodlands, palm and riverine forests and into wetlands in a single outing. The rich diversity includes more than 350 bird species and game typical to northern Kenya, such as buffalo, lion and leopard, as well as Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe and lesser kudu. The lodge has a special licence to walk, fish, and conduct night game drives.
Elsa’s Kopje remains one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, with one of the most spectacular settings. It is the best upmarket location to view rhino in their natural habitat in Kenya and has for many years been the best kept secret amongst discerning travellers who are passionate about beauty, peace and true wilderness.
